Questions To Ask For Those Considering VoIP For Their Business

Posted on: 15 March 2022

Switching your business phone lines over to VoIP can give you some significant benefits over a traditional phone line. However, you likely have questions before you decide to move forward. Here are some things that you should know about VoIP.

What Equipment Is Needed For VoIP?

A hosted VoIP system only requires a phone to answer the call. Of course, you can't just use any phone, since you will need a special type of phone designed to work with your VoIP system. However, this type of phone only requires Internet access. You can purchase a wireless phone that will connect to a WiFi network or a hardwired phone that needs to be plugged into your modem. For a small office, you may be able to get by with plugging the phone directly into your modem. For a large office, you'll need to use a router to run multiple Ethernet lines into your modem.

What Happens If Your Internet Connection Is Down?

One of the unfortunate things about a VoIP service is that your phone lines will not work if you are having problems with your Internet connection. However, you are not limited to using the phone system in your office that is connected to a hard-wired Internet connection. It is possible to transfer calls to a personal cell phone and still take phone calls while your wired Internet connection is down.

Do You Need Fast Speeds For VoIP?

Making a single VoIP call over the Internet does not require much bandwidth in order to complete the call. However, you need bandwidth for both uploads and downloads for the calls to take place. You can run into an issue if you have a very large office where multiple phone calls are being made at once and also have very slow upload speeds. Businesses that transfer a lot of data with low speed caps may also end up maxing out their speeds, which can have an impact on VoIP services. While there is no minimum requirement for VoIP, it's important that you dedicate a portion of your bandwidth to it so that VoIP works smoothly.

Can You Easily Expand VoIP?

A huge advantage of VoIP is that it is easy to scale your phone system up or down so that it is in line with your business. It is easy to set up new lines for new users with your existing infrastructure. All you need is a new phone with access to the Internet for it to work.
